For women who are pre- or post-menopausal, a common indicator of an estrogen deficiency is frequent or chronic UTIs. The estrogen deficiency changes the chemistry in the urinary tract and potentially lowers immunity so that the womans body cannot fight the bacteria as efficiently as in the past. These women are often told their frequent UTIs are due to hygiene factors and are not due to internal, physiological issues. This is simply not true. Potential ways to stop recurrent UTIs include: - Using herbs to balance hormones - Using D-Mannose on a daily basis. (D-Mannose makes bacteria slippery and makes it impossible for them to stick to the walls of the urinary tract.) - Taking Vitamin C on a daily basis Good hygiene practices (such as wiping front to back, urinating after intercourse, etc.) can help and are obviously recommended, but may not be enough to prevent UTIs whose root cause is a hormonal imbalance. Bioidentical hormone replacement is also an option, but its usually my last choice.
