Foreign Affairs Minister John Barid says reports that a Calgary man was killed while fighting in war-torn Syria come as no surprise to him. Baird adds “there is probably more than one Canadian” fighting with rebels trying to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad. The dead man has been identified as 22-year-old Damian Clairmont, who reportedly left Calgary in 2012 to join Al-Qaida-linked rebels in Syria. Clairmont who also went by the name Mustafa Al-Gharib was a high school drop out who apparently tried to take his life before finding Islam. (L)
