Former Boston Red Sox pitcher and current ESPN baseball analyst Curt Schilling sent out a tweet Tuesday afternoon using a hashtag that refers to a recent meme that’s been spreading around in conservative circles lately. The hashtag, #chipotledoesntservenypdofficers, originated from a Facebook post that came out around Christmas that claims employees at a New York City Chipotle refused to serve eight NYPD officers and instead put their hands up and told the officers “don’t shoot,” referencing the “Hands up! Don’t Shoot!” protest chant in the aftermath of the Michael Brown killing.Of course, like most conservative memes, this one, for the most part, is based on a lie. Snopes, the rumor-busing website, looked into the story and found that it is “mostly false.” Apparently, the story grew from an incident that occurred at a Chipotle in Brooklyn on December 16th. Rather than the entire crew protesting in front of the cops and then denying them service, a single cashier decided to spontaneously do the ‘hands up’ gesture when a group of NYPD officers entered. The officers decided to leave of their own volition rather than order at the restaurant. #schillingisastd
