Former German President visited Kenya Former German President Dr. Horst Köhler visited Kenya from 4 to 8 September. He held talks with political leaders including H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta, former President Mwai Kibaki and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. He also met with the German business community, journalists and young leaders. In his meetings and talks, former President Köhler emphasized the need for stronger Kenyan-German relations, in particular in the field of private sector activities. In June, he had already chaired the first East African-German Business Summit in Nairobi. Dr. Köhler strongly advocated further collaboration in the area of vocational training. During his meeting with young Kenyan leaders, former President Köhler listened to their visions for the future of Kenya. He promised continued German support to youth development and empowerment. He said that he will take back a message of optimism and ambition by the young Kenyan leaders. The former German President also met the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Mr Achim Steiner. Dr. Köhler expressed support to an ambitious agenda for the post 2015 sustainable development goals and a common but differentiated responsibility of developed and developing countries vis-à-vis climate and development goals. On invitation by H.E. the President of Kenya, former German President Köhler also visited the Masai Mara National Park to support nature conservation and sustainable tourism in Kenya. He also visited an exhibition of paintings by Jak Katarikawe at Nairobi Gallery.
