Former President of Vatican City State and Archbishop of Detroit Cardinal Edmund Szoka passed away at the age of 86. He originated as a priest of the Diocese of Marquette, Michigan, where he was ordained a priest in 1954 by Bishop Noa. He was consecrated by Detroit Archbishop Cardinal John Dearden in 1971 and served as the founding Bishop of Gaylord until 1981. In 1981, Cardinal Szoka was appointed to Archbishop of Detroit. He was the Archbishop of Detroit during Pope John Paul IIs Papal Visit to Detroit in 1987 and started up the Cause for Canonization for Father Solanus Casey. He was created a Cardinal in 1988. In 1990, he was appointed the President of Vatican City State until 2006. He served under Pope John Paul II and beginning of the Pope Benedict XVI in that position and participated in the 2005 Papal Conclave.
