Foster Mama Ellen ~ We all know that fostering saves lives and Ive - TopicsExpress

Foster Mama Ellen ~ We all know that fostering saves lives and Ive always believed that in a general sense, but I recently had an experience that made it feel so much more real to me. I was at the shelter to pick up a new batch of foster kittens one day and I was browsing through the stray kitten room to decide who needed me most. I noticed a group of six kittens who were listed as 4 weeks old and seemingly on the bubble of being weaned and eligible for foster care. They seemed to be curious about the food, but not necessarily equipped to take care of their own needs and were therefore in danger of not passing evaluation. My limit is usually four at a time, but I couldnt split these guys up and not give them all a chance to flourish, so I decided to take a chance and take them home. We started them on formula fed through a syringe several times a day, and manually helped them do their business as their momma would have done. Within a week they were all starting to eat kibble and we were completely off formula a few days after that. The pace of development is amazing at that age, and soon they were eating, using the litterbox, running around, bouncing off the walls, climbing everything and keeping me entertained for hours. We had a bit of upper respiratory infection to deal with, but they all recovered nicely and grew steadily, and by the time they were 8 weeks old they had all reached the magic weight of 2 pounds and were able to be spayed/neutered and placed up for adoption. All six kittens found their forever homes and are living their happily ever afters now, and I truly feel blessed to have saved those six precious lives (and many more). ♥xo...Volunteer, Foster, Donate, Adopt...xo♥
