Four mornings a week throughout July, our ELL campers were hard at work practicing literacy through the visual arts in our Word Laboratory. With the help of enthusiastic volunteers, these young students created alien self-portraits (complete with elaborate backstories) and designed intricate cities from recyclable materials. As students made art, volunteers asked lots of questions--What kind of fruit grows on that tree? How does it taste? Could you use it in pancakes? This one-on-one engagement helps students delve deeper into the worlds theyre creating, and gives them an opportunity to practice their oral language skills. Students and volunteers wrapped up the Word Lab experience by printing a portfolio of their artwork on marbled paper--which they crafted themselves! Thanks to Noble Street Charter High School for letting us use their space, and to all of the wonderful volunteers who made this program possible.
