Fourth Sunday of Lent. This weekend, we have the story of the man born blind. Because he had been born blind, he had no real vision. If people go blind, they have impressions of images that they can work from in their memory. By Jesus putting a mud paste on his eyes and sending him to was in the pool of Siloam, the man comes up back to know an entirely new world, and the most important face he sees is Jesus. This is what happens when we are washed in the waters of Baptism. With the gift of faith, he is able to see the heart of Jesus and come to believe in him as God. God reminds us that we must look to the heart of people and not just their appearances. Seeing only what others want to show us or what we want to see can deceive us and lead us into danger. God tells Samuel that he must see as God sees, looking into the heart. Thus, the gift of faith gives us not only sight, but insight. Faith helps us to see the depth and beauty of life, as well as the ugliness of sin. As Christians, Jesus is teaching us to look into the eyes of one another to see who they are. He is also asking us to look into his eyes, so he can look into our hearts to heal us, strengthen us and challenge us.
