To Bê, my sunshine, born on 2007. If you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles. If you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and will lose one. If youdo not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle. Sun Tzu The Art of War Preface Sun Tzus phrase is absolutely correct and can be applied in any relationship, not just in war. In order to win and avoid headaches caused by all kinds of wrong choices - in family, love, friendships and work - you have to know yourself and the people around you. Even simple gestures, such as choosing the colors of your clothes or getting a new cellular number, involve many hidden game-changers. But how can you get the knowledge that enables you to understand others and yourself? How to know who you and everybody else really are? Often, you probably have needed to figure out a persons demeanor and just didnt know where to start from. You collected every piece of information about the person, from all the sources possible. You used rapport techniques, paid close attention to the persons every move, body language, words, and tone of voice.... You conducted a long and elaborate analysis that consumed lots of money, enthusiasm, energy and time were consumed/wasted, and you still werent able to figure out that person – perhaps you even ended up deceived. The question remains: what drives people to certain behaviors? Why and how can a person, including yourself, act or react in different moments? The same questions are valid for non-living things as well. Why do some cities have a beautiful natural view and a great climate but are not as developed as others with the same qualities? Why some businesses are successful for decades and sometimes over a century, without even trying, while others struggle to make ends meet since the beginning (if they even last)? In the past, I had some knowledge, as everybody else does, yet, it wasnt something that I got involved in too deeply. For example: people from the same cities, states or countries had certain qualities that distinguish them from others. Often its not about race, appearance or accent. People from the same background, but from different areas, have a different behavior. And when talking about a determined line of work or skill, you can even tell the people who dominate it (the geographic area that they are from). Particularly jobs those require long hours of work, are dangerous or harmful. Even jobs paying way above the average obey such criteria. Usually employers know they can rely on that truth all the time. They know it will work at very satisfactory levels and its taken very seriously. There are enough examples of this truth to make at least another great book. For example, in the Florida Everglades (save this name, so later you can compare to a similarity that it has with Seattle), kids follow a traditional ritual of chasing rabbits, starting as young as eight or nine years old. This practice is concentrated in Belle Glade and the surrounding area known as Muck City, named for the peculiar ground where the sugar cane plantations are located. Football coaches will send their assistants there and pay a lot of attention, scouting those kids’ talent to see if there are any future professional athletes among them. When chasing the rabbits, they will become skilled in moving their hips in a way similar to the best football wide receivers (a position that requires advanced athleticism and high degrees of skill), runningbacks, linebackers or any other position. At the same time they will have the speed that it takes to be a professional football player. They are diamonds ready to be cut. Later in this book, I will discuss about them and many other similar stories and give a broader and no-brainer explanation of how it happens. Usually, employees go after the jobs, but sometimes the bosses cant afford missing great opportunities. If they do, they will have a much harder work to beat their competitors or even just stay afloat. Being at least one step ahead is not a luxury, its a survival technique. Thats exactly what happen in this case and many others. Also, it is possible to differ a lot of other things by just knowing where they are from. Most manufactured products are connected with the area where they were made, not to mention music styles, fight styles, dance styles, etc. The list goes on and on. Thats a key fact, but in and of itself, it’s not enough. And I had no clue why it was that way. I didnt know there could be something causing the things to be the way they were. I was caught many times wondering myself if I would ever be able to understand how and why I could relate well with certain people while with others, I just couldnt get through. Why were some people were very fond of me when I expended little or no effort at all, while others were the complete opposite, treating me with hostility and contempt, despite any attempt made by me to get along? How should I perform a study of people that was reliable, fast and precise enough? In 1996, I started to work as a taxi motorcyclist, a profession that is very popular in many countries besides Brazil, the country where I was born and lived at the time. Before engaging in the job, I was deeply concerned. I had a strong knowledge of how to ride a bike and that was not one of my worries (though I knew I had to be extra careful as well, for I had to carry people all day long, and that motorcycle was the kind of vehicle for which you dont have the chance to learn from mistakes). What I couldnt understand was how someone would put a complete stranger in the back of its bike and be safe at the same time. It took me a few weeks till I finally got to the conclusion that the only way to learn the tricks of the job was practicing it. The majority of the costumers were friendly and/or regular ones. I had to learn how and when my alertness had to be increased. Most of the process had to be done in a few seconds, upon meeting the person. I also became an avid listener of any story that could guide me in how to stay in the safe zone in a dangerous profession. For my own astonishment, I started to take increasingly greater risks, including going to work for a few months in another city (Sete Lagoas, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, 240 miles from mine) where I had never being before. Many times, when there was a trip that the other bikers didnt find safe to do, they passed it to me. When talking on the phone, my main focus was the persons voice. When I could see the person, I looked at his clothes and observed his body language, something that I knew little about, but enough to keep me out of troubles. One of my most important insights about how to take the right passenger was never trust a suspicious person unless you had some real information about him. The address was a key one. As obvious and simple as it seems, not everyone took that seriously. An unknown person waiting in a public place and especially in the middle of nowhere had bigger chances of being a set up. That situation would happen a few times monthly, but all I had to do was refuse to take the passenger when it looked really unsafe. Of course, without Gods protection, none of my techniques would be sufficient. I had that in mind. Still, I knew that I had to do my side of the equation, and thanks to Him, I thrived in the profession for 9 years and rode an average of 60,000 miles a year, without being victim of a single crime while carrying passengers (I also was never involved in any accident resulting in injury or major damage to the bike.) Thus, avoiding dangerous customers became a relatively easy duty. Nevertheless, I had little knowledge about how to go further and decipher people on a deeper level. What I realized many times, before starting relationships - a friendship, a romantic or employer-employee/employee-employer relationship for example - was that the right information that would allow me to foresee how they could develop just wasnt there. Everything was blurry. I had no idea why and how I could better it. Being able to see it coming away ahead was just an impossible dream. The romantic ones were the hardest ones. It was as if I was blind to understanding people (and especially myself). A fly that hits a glass window over and over would be an appropriate analogy. Life has so many mysteries that any reliable new knowledge relieves the feeling of being similar to that fly. I knew, at least, that something was wrong. I had to be brave and keep my chin up. Ive made lots of mistakes and was able to make much less good decisions than I wanted . In the process, I have hurt many peoples feelings unintentionally and have been hurt many times. Fixing the past is never a pleasant situation, even when you are able to pinpoint the necessity to fix it. Its better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell. Gautama Buddha The best option that I had was to lower my attempts and my expectations about any aspect of my life in which I was aspiring (most people do that, as they keep turning out to be disappointed with others behaviors). Certain sciences that reveal hidden aspects of people’s character can be useful, such as chiromancy and handwriting. (A good tip about handwriting: If a person’s handwriting is inclined to the left, the person will have a bigger tendency to be resentful, dangerous and attached to the past. Conversely, right-leaning handwriting suggests the person will have a bigger tendency to be someone that forgives easily and is more focused in the future). They explain a lot, thats doubtless. Yet, despite being too difficult to be learned and put in practice, don’t explain the root of people’s behaviors and features.. Then, one day, after getting myself in another love relationship, in which I didnt have a clue if I should stay or end it, I was confused by the fact that I had little credible information about my person of interest, and what caused the attraction that I was feeling for her. Then, my big break came. For the first time, I heard about Numerology, from a coworker that was explaining what he have read in a book written by Aparecida Liberato, a famous Brazilian Numerologist. Interestingly, I had wanted to read that book and was never able to do it (he lent it to another person that never return it to him, and as I was living in the US, it was easier to buy some books about the subject from American authors). In the following pages, I will explain all the steps that I now follow. I had to discover my own insights about Numerology (the 21 rules that are described here, although with good percentage of precision, are not copied from the books that Ive read) and when combining it with the Western and Chinese zodiacs. Theres no formula that will allow anyone to always make the right choices in life, and there will be always much to learn about its many mysteries. Some formulas will allow us to dodge peril and achieve happiness. Believe or not, probably for the first time, you will learn in this book that some people dont want anything, but to live in danger and jeopardize happiness. Its one of the few roads that will lead them on, if not the only one. What is more interesting is that you can separate them, just for knowing their full names, birthday and the place of birth (country, state and city. The place where the person lives is also a big part of his life. Even a street and the number of the residence where the person lives influences his behavior). The way they were raised and other variables also play their roles, though with less impact than the other factors. After I found out that and many other amazing, maybe even mind-blowing facts, I saw that that information wasn’t available elsewhere, at least so clearly, well explained, and placed together. With that knowledge, I can pay more attention and care to people that really deserve that from me. People who are full of life and qualities that I just cant afford to hurt - it will hurt me back much harder if I do. Its also easier for me to spot people for whom it isn’t in my best interest to get closer to. The ones that I already know and now I see that can bring me trouble, I can decide with more assertiveness to get away from. In case I am obligated to deal with them, I will have an edge that will make everything go smoother, knowing what I have to expect, even when the events are behind the hill(events that still will unfold or are hidden by some type of deception). How much would this information be worth to you? Something that allows you to figure out the reasons of even the minor changes that occur in yours or anyone elses life, for bad or for good, with reasonably high accuracy. At the same time, you will be able to figure those changes out in a much faster pace than whatever method you now have, if you have used any. Then again, it also can always work together with your old methodology. These pieces of information are so reliable that for them not to be completely true an endless combination of coincidences would be necessary to explain why the same pattern happens with anything related to them. The pattern of Numerology, Chinese Zodiac and Western Zodiac always were, are and will be there, in one way or another. Anything that has a date or/and a name will have those three sciences attached to it. Marketing is a science that requires significant cunning to be put in practice. Nowadays, the specialists in that area are able to know things about you and your family members that sometimes even yourself dont know, capable of channeling seemingly disconnected facts into surprising conclusions. Companies will spend millions (or billions, when seen as a whole environment) to have their products getting more sales, and consequently, more profits. What about you having the information that will allow you to know what potential a given name will have to help your product, with most of its advertising being made by the name itself. It also applies for the name of a company that you want to start. You can compare with the ones in the market that are doing good or failing. Its important to know the dates in the month and in the year involving the highest chance of success when launching a product, starting a business or at the beginning of an important job. And the best years for each area. Also important is determining the right people to hire in each situation. I will explain that and give some examples to illustrate it, later in this book. Of course, the marketing experts are always a step ahead and any new information they can retain will make them even sharper. If you had the money necessary to do it, you would gladly buy the house or car of your dreams to enjoy with the people that you love most. How much would you want the information that explains why you love those people, their behavior and how to have a fuller and happier life, making less bad decisions and more good ones in all the areas. Note that I am not saying that you can even get the money to buy the house or car of your dreams (or any other kind of display of financial success). Wealth, especially lasting wealth, is consequence of previous actions. The moment your life is balanced, happiness and good fortune is pure consequence, sooner than later. They will eventually become part of your life. However, as Helen Keller said, The best and most beautiful things in life cannot be seen or even touched....They must be felt with the heart. You may change your values and start deferring more to people, creatures and things that you didnt pay so much attention before. In addition, when you have the right shortcuts, it will be away easier to get and stay where you want. If you want to go to a destination, you need to know as many details as possible about the routes that you will have to take, whether the area is safe, if theres traffic and many other things. Everything that you plan is done with more perfection, and its as simple as it sounds. Now, why cant we study and predict others’ behavior, and the reasons why they are that way, before getting too close to them? Even ourselves.... We have to be able to see it coming. Who are we, and why? Life is too short.... Unless you really want to continue to waste your time trying by error..., risking even your safe and things that you dedicated your whole life to obtain, with the most inappropriate people (usually, a person that will disappoint you will be good at deceiving you). -------------- I will try to illustrate that with a story a friend of mine told me long ago, once again, back in the day when I was working in the mototaxi business, in Governador Valadares, MG, Brazil. (Hawaii is to surfing what Brazil is to hang gliding and paragliding by the practitioners of the sport, and Governador Valadares is the world capital of the sport). This friend of mine, Edimilson, a guy with many funny stories, told me how he dealt with a distracted customer. And it was not only him and once, many other bikers did the same thing, with the customers looking for the same hotel (and it probably still happens nowadays). It is something that happens mostly in the late hours of the night, after 11 PM and before 5 AM, when people usually are more worn-out. “After getting to our city for the first time, at the main intercity bus terminal, a bus passenger went to my friend asking if he could take it to the Hotel Rio Branco, a simple but well located hotel of my city. “Say no more…. I know the place and will get you there….” he told the costumer. Then he went to next corner with the passenger behind him on the bike. He made a right turn on a one way street, going straight for two blocks, made another right turn on another one way street, going straight another 2 blocks (occasionally, in situations similar to that, he –or one of the other bikers- would go a little further, to make it even more interesting), making another right turn, then he went straight for other 3 blocks (4 if counting an alley as a street) and made another right turn into another one way street. Then, going straight, in the third block, at the left hand side, there was the hotel. At the end of the trip, which didn’t take more than 7 minutes, even catching all the lights on the red, they had to stop on the right side of the street, so the customer couldn’t see what was happening when he was getting inside of the hotel. He couldn’t look away, at the left of the hotel’s front door (if coming from inside). On the next day, with the day light, when the customer was leaving the hotel, at the front door of the hotel, he encountered a big, mind-boggling surprise. One of the things that the customer probably said was “What the heck is going on here?” .The yard of the bus terminal was right in front of him, less than 150 meters away. All the former passenger had to do was cross one street and one wide avenue, at its left. It would take less than 2 minutes for him to get on the place where he came off of the bus, walking in a normal pace. And to get to the biker was half the distance that he had to walk to go the hotel, but on the opposite side. The only problem is that the hotel is located at the back of the bus terminal and at night it’s harder to see things. He probably had followed the other passengers to the main entrance of the bus terminal, where the bikers were waiting for their potential passengers. My friend couldn’t be called exactly dishonest. He was simply following the person’s order, though he knew all the time the customer could just as easily walk there. The route that he took was the shortest way to get there by a licensed motorized vehicle, using the streets and avenues he was allowed to. It is a funny story, but if we give it a deeper thought, during our lives, we act like that customer in various ways: when making decisions in the emotional area, in the finances, about our physical health, our professional careers…. And, there will be cases that someone - or even the person placed as the biker of the story - will try to show us the better choice, pointing the shortcut, and we will pay little or no attention at all, and that when thinking of the best case scenario. Somehow, our unconscious will not let us do it the right way. The customer, if acting wisely, could learn a lot from that. The “shortcut to the hotel” is the enlightened path we don’t pay attention to or take for granted during our lives. (If you want to check the map of my city and understand a little better what I just said, just go online to Google Earth. You will find even funnier when seeing the picture of the actual place.) -------------- After reading this book to the end, you will be able to confirm everything that is written here, mainly in two ways: 1) Checking any person- including yourself - creature or non-living thing, and seeing how their characteristics match with what you will read here. You will be able to foresee the course of development of a relationship, and unwelcome threats will be easier to be avoided. Psychology and psychiatry are reliable sciences as well, and, quite advantageously, the sciences here explained will always reinforce a conclusion made by them and vice-versa. Carl Jung, one of the most important names in psychiatry and founder of analytical psychology, was a great believer in Numerology, which for him was a very tangible matter in our lives. He was also an astrology enthusiast. Now you may think: A man that was so ahead of his time and has made so many advances in the study of the mind to better our lives, gives more credibility to Numerology and Astrology. This may be worth my attention. The real truth is that these sciences give Carl Jung or anyone that uses them more credibility, hardly the other way around. --------------
