Fragment, From the heart of Iran Let us begin by recalling the War of Independence of the United States of America – the pioneer of revolutions – that shook the foundations of Europe and heightened the confrontation between France and Spain, whose royal houses had joined together against England. This conflict was the genesis of the U.S. constitution – a model of freedom and emancipation. Thirteen years later, in 1789, the French Revolution erupted, disconcerting all of Europe and, even though it was a few years distant, the nineteenth century was somehow already under way – a century that would witness great changes and even greater revolutions in every facet of mankind’s life. New political theories and philosophical movements sprang up everywhere. Religion, and everything we believed, had no choice but to begin adapting to the mind-set of a new day with its insistence on freedom of thought. At the same time, the world was opening up at an accelerating pace. New inventions such as the telegraph, the steamship and the railroad enabled people to travel at previously unheard-of speeds and the movement of goods achieved levels previously unknown. It was not only transportation and communications that underwent a huge transformation: industry and the mass production of consumer goods required a large workforce in order to build up and maintain this new world. All these developments caused man’s perspective, as well as his place in the universe, to change. All these changes led the great powers to seek out new markets and search for raw materials, and they began exploring countries and territories which had been ignored for centuries, such as those which were then under the Ottoman Empire (e.g., Iran). It was not only commercial aspirations and the desire for riches that attracted the great powers to that part of the world; there were also many adventurers, especially from Central Europe, who traveled there in search of ancient knowledge of which they had only...
