His reasoning being that we - white people - had treated the native peoples of this country so badly that we would have to be looking over our shoulder forever, waiting for pay back that it would be better to just get rid of them - humane even - and have the situation done with. This is a remarkable admission - BECAUSE - of the violence and horror we had perpetrated on native peoples we had serious reason to fear them. Our crimes against these people made them fearful to us. I think of this while listening to President Obama addressing the Trayvon Martin verdict. Can white america be as honest as Baum? We fear black men and people of color in general, not because they are inherently scary, but because of what we have done to them. We fear our own reflection in their eyes.
