Fred Phelps (1929-2014) did his job perfectly. He forced America to recognize that his signs were just day-glo affirmations of legit talking-points handed down by religious leaders and politicians on elite levels for years. He was the rare right-wing conservative who extended those talking-points to their logical conclusion, and forced a public debate of the underlying morality. He was the single most effective anti-war protester of this century, but his reasons were so weird and his methods so distasteful that now, the war makes perfect sense. Every time Fred Phelps spoke or acted, the values he claimed to represent inched closer to what Reagan called the ash-heap of history, and for that he is, most ironically, an American hero. RIP
