Dear Ambassador, Im writing to you regarding Dr. Amer Alshawa, who has been detained by the State Security Agency of your country for over 85 days without any charge or information about his whereabouts, while also being denied access to a lawyer or his family members. He is an intelligent, honest and hardworking individual who holds a Ph.D. in Electromagnetics and Laser Optics from School of Electrical Engineering, Ohio University, USA. His arrest and detention was a shock for all who know him to be a peaceful citizen and a reputable businessman. Friends and colleagues will attest to his dedication to family, community and social justice, and his role as a model citizen in both in the USA and Turkey. The family initially sought support through social media (Facebook Twitter, Petitions) but these measures proved futile. They have now turned to employing all available measures to contact the international, and governmental channels for information regarding his whereabouts. Such disregard of human rights and the international law is not only deplorable and taints the positive image UAE paints in the western world, but it also seriously risks her diplomatic relations with fellow countries and the international NGOs that care for human rights as well. Hence, I solemnly condemn and protest the UAE policy of subjecting people to enforced and involuntary disappearance, as in the case of Dr. Amer Alshawa, who should be released at once. I urge you to inform your government to take immediate action regarding this matter.
