French artist Henri Matisse preferred to paint motifs that were soothing or calming to the mind, “something like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.” To achieve this in his paintings he tried hard to stay away from troubling or depressing matter in his compositions, believing strongly that certain art could revitalize the spirit. The French Master often employed the use of black ,too, in an active color role and not simply as an element to depict a background receding into space or a tragic tone. His use of activated black could assume surprising roles within his palette’s spectrum. In fact he was known to say that black was a force and if he didn’t know what color to use that’s what he put down . Indeed black has the amazing ability to capture light and create an alluring shininess that emanates a special effect. Because of its quality Matisse called the color black “The Queen of Colors.”Many of his luxurious paintings were interior settings, often with a single female model portrayed. During his illustrious career he travelled to England, Italy, Germany, Spain, Tahiti, America, Russia, Scandinavia, Holland and North Africa. He was able to digest the cultures of many of these places to create his relaxing but rhythmic style of Art. Today’s ipad painting. Title: MATISSE’S ARMCHAIR
