RE: STOP PROPAGANDA AND WORK Accra 27th November 2014- The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum’s attention has been drawn to a statement issued and signed by the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akomea on the country’s generating plants and their year of commissioning. The statement lists a number of generating plants as having being commissioned between 2001 and 2008. In as much as Ghanaians are only interested in reliable supply of electricity to their homes and businesses and not when a generating plant was constructed, it is important, as a matter of public record, to state the facts as they are. The Ministry therefore wishes to publish all the generating plants of Ghana and their year of commissioning. Item Power Plant Type Installed capacity (MW) Year of Commissioning 1 Akosombo GS Hydro 1020 1966 2 Kpong GS Hydro 160 1982 3 TAPCo Thermal/CC 330 1998 4 TICo Thermal/CC 220 2000 5 MRP Thermal/CC 80 2007 6 TT1PP Thermal/CC 125 2010 7 TT2PP Thermal/CC 49.5 2010 8 SAP Thermal/CC 200 2010 9 CENIT Thermal/CC 125 2012 10 T3 Thermal/CC 132 2013 11 Navrongo Solar 2 2013 12 Bui Hydro 400 2013 Total 2843.5 It is imperative to stress the point that the NPP Government added 80MW to our generation capacity between 2001 and 2008. Indeed between 2001 and 2006 the NPP Government did not add a single megawatt to the national installed generation capacity until 2007 when a consortium of mining companies put up the 80MW plant during the energy crises. The Ministry however agrees with the point made in the statement that suggests that we need to work to address the current challenges facing the power sector. As a matter of fact, the Ministry is doing just that. The causes of the current power challenges namely – poor inflows of water into our hydro dams, erratic fuel supply from Nigeria and non-availability of some generating units- are being addressed. a) In the short term our engineers are working around the clock to bring on stream the plants that are currently unavailable because of one challenge or the other. b) In anticipation of these problems and the difficulties ahead as a result of the effect of weather patterns on hydro generation, the Ministry late last year initiated steps to bring in a 450 MW capacity fully flexible and ready to deploy emergency power ship system to Ghana in two installments. The first and second units each of 225MW are expected to commence commercial operation in the 1st and 2nd Quarters of 2015 respectively. c) Under the Ministry’s directive VRA has now engaged the service of an Operations and Maintenance Company (O&M) to work hand-in-hand with them to complement local skills and expertise in the optimum management of our thermal power plants which have recorded the lowest availability in recent times. d) It is also anticipated that the completion of the 110MW expansion work on the TICO plant and Units 1 & 2 of the Kpone Thermal Power Plant (220MW) by the first quarter of 2015 will add more megawatts to the system. e) The Gas Processing Plant is currently undergoing commissioning. Even within this commissioning stage Plants at Aboadze are receiving significant processed gas from the Jubilee field. It is anticipated that the gas supply will gradually ramp up to 120MMSCF when the facility is in full operation. The Ministry takes this opportunity to express its appreciation to Ghanaians for their understanding, even in the face of these temporal difficulties and wishes to promise that we will continuously work around the clock until this perennial challenge is eliminated. Signed Edward A Bawa Head of Communications.
