Frenier, Louisiana is on Hwy 51 between Manchac and LaPlace. In the late 1800s, it swelled to about 800 residents. There were cabbage farms, a church, and a bustling town center. There was also a notorious resident named Julia Brown. A self proclaimed Voodoo Priestess, Ms. Brown would terrorize the town folk with tales of their demise.. in song form. Before she died, she said that she would take the town down with her when she went. She passed away on Sept 28, 1915. On Sept. 29, 1915, a hurricane coming on shore pushed storm surge waters back to the small farming/fishing community. The water rose over 20 feet above the normal sea level. Many lost their lives and the town was deserted. The dead from the flood were said to be buried somewhere in the swamp that used to be the town. Locals today still say they see ghosts of the town folk who died that day wandering the swamp. Side Note: The locals also say they see the Rougarou (Cajun Folklore Werewolf.), but we all know theres no such thing as a Rougarou. ;-)
