Friends: Greetings from Common Cup Family Shelter! As a member of Sunnyside Centenary or University Park United Methodist Church (or as a curious visitor, guest, or extended community member), you may be interested in the following volunteer opportunity. Located in a single room at Sunnyside Church, Common Cup is a winter emergency shelter "providing a safe haven to homeless families by welcoming them in a caring and nonjudgmental way." (from our website - more at commoncupshelter.org) Our most important asset remains the volunteer hosts who provide hospitality, care, and friendship to families throughout the season (November 1-March 31). In past years, many folks have been able to regularly host throughout the 5-month season, some even volunteering one night every week! Others have been able to volunteer on a more semi-regular or infrequent basis (once or twice each month, or a few times throughout the season). Still others have served at the eleventh hour as coveted "substitutes". Whatever hosting you may wish to contribute, know that all hosts play the most essential part in this ministry: people-power! And this season is no different. We will depend on many caring, faithful people again. All hosts receive thorough training and a detailed handbook before volunteering. Training is generally held on the second Sunday of each month at 4:00 PM at Sunnyside Centenary UMC (November through March). A pre-season training is available on Sunday, October 13, 2013 (4 PM @ Sunnyside). You can (and are encouraged to) host as a duo, even as a small group. Duties begin at 6:30 PM and finish at 8:00 AM the next morning (see our website for specific responsibilities). Know that whatever your availability, all hosts are super-valuable to this important ministry.
