Friends keep pestering me with “happy independence” since morning. What independence are they actually celebrating? Was this how Nigeria was on the eve of independence in 1960? Could $20b disappeared without traces and sanction by the government in 1960? Could a “Christian leader” in 1960 use facility at his disposal to go into illegal arm race worth over $9m for the government? Was the government of Balewa fingered for aiding and abetting a terror organization that could exterminate over 8000 Nigerians in five years? Could the man at the centre in 1960 make innuendoes that could polarize the country? What are we celebrating? A government that allowed health workers to go on strike for months? Making my biological mother to die of cancer in the process? A government that allowed polytechnic students to waste an academic year due to lecturers strike? A government that allowed universities across the nation to be closed for more than six months? A government that trivializes heinous issues like stealing of public funds? A government that honours and lionizes corrupt people? A government that took over 78,000 masked security men to Osun state for electoral fraud? A government that is campaigning by proxy using public funds? What are we celebrating? Poverty, insecurity, corruption, emasculated military, unemployment, power outage, etc?
