Friends of Flagstaff’s Future is very disappointed to learn that the City granted a 20 year contract to AZ Snowbowl today. We are deeply concerned that the City will be committing such a valuable water source without fully knowing the conditions and realities we will be facing over the next 20 years. These include water shortages as well as new technologies to clean reclaimed water, potentially making it a valuable resource in the not so far future. Currently the City only has only 2 additional 20 year reclaimed contracts (per Brad Hill). Therefore, instead of moving away from water intensive industries and activities and promoting water conservation by limiting such long term contracts, the City chose to promote non sustainable practices. We find this decision very irresponsible. In addition while we understand the administrative process granting the utilities director ultimate decision making power, as specified in City Policy “Principles of Sound Water Management Water Policies Plan” (Policy C7 page 23) we feel that public input, and especially data to support the claims that Snowbowl is an economic driver of the winter economy, should have been incorporated into this very controversial decision. We will continue to advocate for water conservation and oppose such wasteful and controversial uses of our most precious resource. A number of lawyers are working on reviewing this decision and the details of the contract. We will update you if we have any information.
