Friends, the CIWC is proud to announce the following victory against wage theft: Cincinnati Company Queen City Pallets Pays $27,000 in Back Wages For Immediate Release: July 3, 2014 CINCINNATI, OH -- Area workers recover $27,000 in stolen wages from local company with assistance from the Cincinnati Interfaith Workers Center (CIWC). Nine workers at Cincinnati’s Queen City Pallets recently received lump-sum payments averaging $3,000.00 each as compensation for wage theft committed by their employer, Queen City Pallets – a Cincinnati company that has been committing wage theft for years. The nine recently repaid workers were misclassified as independent contractors by Queen City Pallets and denied overtime wages for hours worked in excess of 40 in the workweek. These nine workers built and repaired pallets, doing so under the direct control of Queen City Pallets. The workers clocked in and out at times set by Queen City Pallets, took their breaks only when permitted by Queen City Pallets, were disciplined by and had all tools and equipment provided by Queen City Pallets. Queen City Pallets, like many other employers, is engaged in a pattern of misclassifying employees as independent contractors in an all too common attempt to avoid labor laws and undermine the honest efforts of its law abiding competitors. The Queen City Pallets workers heard about the CIWC from a friend, took their complaint to the CIWC, and learned about their rights. The CIWC - using its team of organizers and lawyers – trained the workers and helped them negotiate directly with the employer for their back pay. CIWC Organizer Manuel Perez: “they stayed together in defense of their rights, in the face of empty threats at work after coming forward. Ultimately, the workers won back wages by interrupting the work day to sit down at the job site and negotiate directly with the bosses. This generated a quick resolution and wage theft victory.” Queen City Pallets is a repeat wage theft offender; the CIWC first helped other Queen City Pallets workers get restitution for wage theft back in 2008. Queen City Pallets has been misclassifying workers as independent contractors and refusing to pay overtime for years. The CIWC has forwarded information regarding Queen City Pallets to the Federal Department of Labor to demand an investigation and recovery of back wages for all Queen City Pallets employees.
