Fright-wingers have always hated these programs and have been opposing them since they first appeared. It may be an oversimplification, but a significant reason is not necessarily that there are taxes that pay for these things, but that they are run by government agencies. They see something inherently wrong with that and claim that it would be better if retirement programs and medical insurance programs were run by the so-called free market. (Thats forgetting for the moment that there really is a free market. There isnt. Its an ephemeral construct used to delude the fright/right/white-wing faithful. But thats an argument for another time.)
