From - Mark Dreyfus The United Nations Refugee Convention was signed by Australia 60 years ago today. It is the defining international document that sets out refugees’ rights and the responsibilities of nations providing protection and asylum. Under the Menzies Liberal government in 1954, Australia was the sixth nation to bring the convention into effect. Since that time Australia has accepted 610,000 men, women and children seeking asylum. The UNHCR reports that there are approximately 15 million refugees worldwide today and you can read more about the work of UNHCR in Australia at unhcr.org.au/unhcr/
