From Barbara J Cobuzzi A little Remedial Politics & History for Fox News Viewers • The Affordable Care Act and Obamacare are the same thing • FDR gave us Social Security – GOP screamed “Socialism” but it’s one of the most successful and popular programs in American history. • LBJ gave us Medicare - Reagan called it “socialized medicine” but, it’s far more effective than our current insurance system with less than 10% the overhead • Henry Ford raised workers’ wages – Wall Street called him a socialist. It turned out to be good for Ford AND the country to pay employees enough to purchase what they were making. • Organized Labor built a strong middle class, gave us weekends, minimum wage, child labor laws, paid vacations & the 5-day work week - It has always been opposed by conservatives – and (beginning with Reagan’s trickle-down economics), median wages have declined in almost perfect correlation to the decline in union membership. • Historically, government austerity makes recession & unemployment worse – not better. • Reagan raised the debt ceiling 18 times; GHW Bush, 9 times; GW Bush, 7 times; Clinton & Obama, 4 times each.
