From: Becky Dennison Date: Tue, Oct 15, 2013 at 10:36 AM Subject: Homeless Bill of Rights - City Council hearing tomorrow if you can make it! To: Becky Dennison Hi everyone, Soon after I sent the email below, we found out that the Public Works Committee of the City Council will be hearing LaBonge’s motion to limit free food provision this week. The links to the agenda and motion are below, as well as the hearing details. I know it’s last minute, but if anyone can come to oppose this motion and any legislation that impacts the ability to share and eat food with those most in need – we’d love to have your voices. Hopefully, we can build momentum on this issue moving into the action on the 29th! Becky Public Works Committee Date: Wednesday, Oct 16th, 2013 Time: 2:00 pm Location: City Hall 200 N. Spring St. Room 1060 ens.lacity.org/clk/committeeagend/clkcommitteeagend2884513_10162013.pdf clkrep.lacity.org/onlinedocs/2013/13-1238_mot_9-17-13.pdf From: Becky Dennison Sent: Friday, October 11, 2013 2:43 PM To: Becky Dennison Subject: Homeless Bill of Rights Updates and Next Steps Los Angeles Homeless Bill of Rights Supporters, Thank you to everyone who made last Saturday’s planning session a great success! We wanted to share a summary of the priorities identified and next steps – feel free to share with others (I’m pretty sure a few people did not sign in). On Saturday, 4 main priorities were identified: 1. Hold local direct actions to bring attention to the problem of criminalizing homelessness and solutions such as a Statewide Bill of Rights 2. Outreach!! Including getting more organizational endorsers and holding an educational forum on the Westside 3. Improve messaging, including holding a workshop/training for all lead folks in LA 4. Secure support of local and state elected officials, including holding a legislative briefing and targeting Councilmember Mike Bonin There were a lot of other great ideas raised that will be further explored as well. As of now – this is what we are proposing for the immediate next steps: 1. Hold monthly planning meetings for LA endorsers and supporters – with the next one being Saturday, November 2nd from 10 am – 12 pm. If anyone has a site they can offer for the meeting, please let me know. 2. Plan two direct actions – tentatively: a. Tuesday, October 29th at 5:00 pm at the Hollywood food line that has been under attack, and in response Councilmember LaBonge introduced the motion to limit the provision of free food – RIGHT TO SHARE AND RECEIVE FOOD b. Thursday, December 5th at the federal courthouse in Pasadena, when arguments will be heard related to enforcement against people living in their vehicles – RIGHT TO REST AND RIGHT TO OCCUPY A VEHICLE 3. Continue to get endorsements!! One small group set a goal to ask 45 organizations to support – we encourage people to ask more! The endorsement form is attached. Remember – right now we are asking people to endorse our principles and get involved in the efforts to prevent criminalization – we will let people know when there is an actual bill to endorse. And – a group of people already took one follow up step and delivered our letter to Assembly Speaker John Perez’s local office yesterday, which was International Homeless Day. Thanks to Wesley, Lydia, Sean, Joe, Charles, Gerardo, Michelle, Bilal, John and Steve! A request to meet directly with the Speaker was submitted, and we will keep people updated of these and other legislative visits. For people who want to be even more involved, these issues are on the weekly agenda of LA CAN’s civil rights committee, which meets on Mondays at 1:00 PM. We will notify this list as the actions get confirmed, and give reminders for the monthly meeting. Please let me know if you need or want any additional information and updates. We look forward to building a stronger voice in preventing criminalization in Los Angeles and fighting for short and long-term solutions together! Becky and the LA CAN team
