From Capt. J.H. Stuarts diary: Aug 5th 1862 —Marched to Port Royal—the people along the road delighted to see us. We were a little too late for a party of Yankees who had been there that morning. Stopped a few minutes at Mr. Bernards Gaymont, a most charming place on a hill commanding the country for many miles around. It is an Eden if there is one on earth. You could see the Rappahannock winding for miles from N.E. to S.W. Beyond, the highlands seemed to meet the blue heavens, while around were broad fields & high hills. What a beautiful place. Oh, if only I was the fortunate owner of such a paradise. How happy I should be with ————. Stopped at Rapahannock Academy about 2 oclock for half an hour here. I saw eleven prisoners whom we had captured, a part of those who had been at Port Royal & at Dr. Bernards in the morning. On the person of one of the Yankees was found a watch which he had stolen from Mr. Bernards negro cook.. We slept that night at Round Oak Church my saddle for my pillow. Edward was quite tired. On the evening of this day one of the 3rd Regt. Va. Cav. was unfortunately shot by a member of the 9th. From a high eminence saw the steeples of the churches of Fredericksburg eight miles distant. Major von Borcke had an adventure with a rattlesnake. The reptile crawled over his arm while he slept. He awoke & killed him with his sabre. Learned from the country people that a Yankee force five or six thousand strong had passed down the Telegraph road – had inf., cav, and artillery – Gen Augur’s Brigade.
