From Cllr James M Butcher, Chair of Lancing Parish Council Statement regarding Travellers on Croshaw Rec Today (29th) Lancing Parish Council successfully evicted the travellers on Monks Rec. Unfortunately, hours later, travellers set up an illegal encampment on Crowshaw Rec. I visited the site and while I was there the group almost doubled in size, making it a much larger camp than Monks Rec. The Police were on site informing residents how to report any incidences (which should be to the 101 number). This is also how any impact on the community should be reported. Lancing United were also on site securing their new building and removing any gear from the site. The Parish Council has stationed a security guard on the Rec for the night to protect Lancing Uniteds building. The Vice Chair Cllr Ann Bridges, the Clerk to the Council Colin Hunt and I have all been on the case. Tomorrow morning (Wednesday) we are expecting a decision from the Duty Inspector as to whether or not to use section 61 powers to immediately evict the travellers. If this is not done the Parish Council will undertake a welfare audit, they ask the travellers to leave within 24hrs. If they still do not leave we will go to Court to secure their eviction within the 24hrs following those proceedings. Because of the larger group size, the impact on community football pitches, the disruption to the local clubs and the surrounding residential buildings we are hopeful the Duty Inspector will agree to the use of Section 61 powers and evict the travellers ASAP.
