From Dr Susan Bowie, a Shetland GP. Please read. Well here it is .. My pal Beth Greene said I should put this up and so have done. Got shot down in flames today, but there you go. We shouldnt be silenced . Everyone in a democracy has the right to say. Why do I want us to stay together. Firstly because Of what the Independence campaign has done to us. Its divided friends, and families, and if it will divide the country. I think the things that bind us are greater than what would push us apart. Even though its been described as a cuddly civic nationalism, and I can understand why some of my good friends want it, to believe in something better, separatism has brought out the worst in some folks and it has been terribly divisive. Weve had Jim Murphy getting threatened in Motherwell, bricks through windows in Glasgow with No posters up. A friend who will leave Scotland in the event of an unnecessary border being imposed In an uncertain world there are so many bigger issues to worry about, not to mention poverty and health inequality in Scotland. Nothing much has been done in Scotland for the last few years, the focus being on the Indy ref. But Divorce is not usually painless. To my mind in this small uncertain world borders need to come down , than be put up artificially. It worries me that in Europe there are two countries Italy and Greece, teetering on the brink of economic disaster. Is this really the time for Scotland to go it alone? i do think a lot of those supporting an independent Scotland would have supported more devolution is it had been on offer, or federalism. I think there are a lot of folk on opposing sides of the debate who basically want the same thing. We all want the best for Scotland. Its a great shame that we have become so polarised. But the so-called independence being offered by the Yes campaign...it isnt really going it alone... Westminster would control our currency, but we would have no representation there. And worse wed lose the Scottish labour and liberal and SNP MPs there and may have the prospect of a right wing govt at Westminster in perpetuity controlling our currency, and wed have no one representing us? Also. I dont think Independence offers anything for Shetland. Although we have the highest economic growth in Scotland here, there has still been a squeeze on Health and education for the last few years as everyone can see. There is no reason to think that would improve if money is tight after Independence, and in the end of course, it would be the sick poor and vulnerable that might suffer. Is it worth that risk. Independence at any price? Unlike Alex Salmond, Im not a gambler. There are no definites with independence. Just belief, ifs buts and maybes. Hope for some. I can see the appeal.. But most folk want to know that theyll be paid, next week, and next year, and in what currency. Euros pounds or groats.. They will want to know pensions and benefits will still be there, and the country can afford it, and their savings will still be there. And their jobs. Are these things worth the risk? Or the sacrifice for a new flag and national anthem ? A month to go and really we dont know! As far as the NHS is concerned, its fully devolved just now. We should and could be having the best of both worlds. We have the education system and the NHS in Scotland that we mostly want. Its not just the financial threat to it, post Indy, the possibility of a 6 billion black hole, less than a month to go, and in my small field, we dont know about doctors and nurses training, undergrad and post grad, and whether our training which at the moment is world class will be affected. If it is it will affect future workforce, and at the minute we are having problems with recruitment.. Will that get worse? Im sure this is affecting other professions in Scotland due to the uncertainty. The great Archie McPherson was speaking earlier today about how his taxi driver had told him she would give yes a wee try. But you cant give it a wee try. Its a vote forever. There can be no way back. No way back from uncertainty, no way back from a gamblers unknown future. Vote for security, certainty and a hopeful, socially just Scotland.as part of the UK
