From GHOST OF A CHANCE (sequel to RESTLESS SPIRITS): “What is with that guy?” Ron asked. “That trick didn’t even faze him.” “Are you kidding?” said Jimmy. “He looked pretty freaked.” “That was his freaked face? Really?” Jimmy shrugged. “He’s good at hiding it. But did you see how I picked up that mug?” “Yeah! You did good, kid.” He frowned at the trash bin. “I didn’t mean to drop it, though. I was trying to move it to the other counter.” “You’ll get there. It just takes practice. It’s not easy at first to keep your emotions worked up enough stay tangible for long. But keep trying. You’ll get the hang of it.” “I don’t want to scare Doug, though.” “You’re not trying to scare him,” said Ron. “You’re simply trying to get his attention so he’ll be receptive to your message.” “But can’t your sister just tell him for me?” “Not if he doesn’t believe what she’s telling him.” Jimmy seemed to think this over. “But, if we can get him to listen, and I tell him what I need him to know, then I’ll be able to . . . to move on? To whatever comes next?” “Yeah. If you want to.” “Didn’t you want to?” Ron shrugged. “I guess I’ve got too much to stick around here for.” “So it’s not because you’re afraid? Of what’s after?” Ron thought of what she’d seen when her friends were freed from the hell spawn Sarah, what she’d felt as they crossed over. The golden light that washed over everything, the warmth, the sense of pure peace. She remembered the tug she’d felt toward that light, the impulse to walk into it. But Joe couldn’t go, and the tug her heart felt toward him had been stronger. “No,” she told Jimmy. “It’s nothing to be afraid of.”
