From Group: SAHS BBM Forum Messages ---------- Simhavishnu Varma: Group Discussion 1: Is Hinduism a polytheistic religion? Polytheism means the belief in many Gods. Monotheism means the belief in one supreme God. Hinduism is often dubbed a religion of many Gods. One commentator even went so far as to say that India has more Gods than people. The first discussion topic is whether Hinduism is a religion where all its deities are equally God or whether there is one supreme God in the Hindu pantheon (if so, who?). The topic more broadly is what is the relation between the deities of Hinduism? Is there a hierarchy etc. Provide reasons if possible. Note: Do not analyse other views or debate. You are permitted to ask for clarification of other views if they are ambiguous, but no more. Respect the views of others and enjoy the discussion:) shrI kR^iShNArpaNamastu Participant 1: To my understanding, Hinduism is a monotheistic religion as there is one supreme God, who is Vishnu. Vishnu manifests Himself into different avataras such as Ram, Krishna and comes down on Earth to teach us mere mortals to follow the right path in life. Participant 2: I believe that we have one Supreme God, Lord Vishnu. He gives power to all our deities that we worship who in return plays various roles in our lives. Participant 3: Totally agree with Participant 1 and Participant 2. Well said. Participant 4: I also agree. Participant 5: Well said... Totally agree. Participant 6: I believe in the supremacy of the female aspect. Simhavishnu Varma: Those who believe that Vishnu is the supreme God are called Vaishnavas. There are many Vaishnava schools in Hinduism. Likewise, there are also Hindus who believe that Devi (Goddess) is the supreme being. They are called Shaktas. Hindus who believe in the supremacy of Shiva are called Shaivas. There are also many Shakta and Shaiva schools of thought. Participant 6: From a Hindu males point of view I think we should have the utmost respect for the females as they are the luxmis in our lives. Participant 7: I also believe in the Goddess. Participant 8: Hara Hara Mahadev. I believe in the supremacy of Shiva. P.S. I will ask this topic as a question and create a poll in our Facebook group. shrI kR^iShNArpaNamastu
