From Hemmings Motor News... Round out your road trip repertoire with this list of more than 100 songs Thomas A. DeMauro at 4:00 pm | 4 comments cartunes_2000 Photo by the author. I’ve been drivin’ all night, my hands wet on the wheel. There’s a voice in my head that drives my heel. It’s my baby callin’: says I need you here. And it’s a half-past four and I’m shiftin gear. Golden Earring’s 1973 hit “Radar Love” is a classic-rock road-trip anthem with lyrics so descriptive that they put you in the driver’s seat. Listed here, are over 100 more car-and/or-road-and-travel-related songs that were culled from my 8-Track, record, cassette and CD collections, and also found through Internet searches. This is not a ranking of the 100 best songs for car lovers or a debate over which ones belong and which ones don’t. It’s much simpler than that. These tunes have been posted, in no particular order, in an effort to help you add to your listening pleasure, while cruising in your favorite ride. They are broken down into genres and sub-categories to make the search easier. While each is generally self-explanatory, for the purposes of this list, “Road Tunes” are songs that discuss travel but do not have a car name in the title or regularly mention a specific car make or model, or possibly even the mode of transportation used. Sometimes it’s a motorcycle (Born to Run) or train (King of the Road) or truck (Me and Bobby McGee), but they still find their way onto car song lists. “Car Songs” mention a specific make or model more than once and may name it in the title. “Standards” are the songs that we regularly see whenever lists like this are compiled. If you see more than one artist or band listed after a song, it means that they each recorded it, and differences between them may be substantial, so it’s worthwhile to check out the various versions. Songs contained in the list range from the highly popular to closet classics and downright rarities. Hopefully, you’re able to find tunes here that you have never heard before, but would like to add to your collection by purchasing them as internet downloads, on new or used CDs or on vintage cassettes or 8-Tracks. As you know, there are thousands of Road Tunes and Car Songs that we haven’t listed here. That’s where you come in. Please respond with your own lists of your favorites and even not-so-favorite songs. Provide the title of the song, the name of the artist or group and what genre it would fit into. If there’s a significant response, this list can be updated and periodically reposted, so that we can all acquire additional Road Tunes and Car Songs to enjoy while rolling down the highway.
