From Linda Bloyer ( who isnt on FB much )- Thank you, Linda, for your dance information ! Hi Everyone, Looks like this week might be a typical August week for the weather. I hope you find time to dance, whatever the weather. ******************************* PLEASE NOTE THE DONATION BUTTONS on the Friends of Country Dance website. THANKS IN ADVANCE for your help to keep the website running. *************** REMINDER: Those of us who dance at various restaurants or clubs need to remember that one of the goals the business has in having dancers there is to increase sales of drinks or food or both. The landscape is littered with clubs that either dont exist anymore or places that welcomed dancers for a while & then ended the dancing. This has been a big issue for country bars, etc. for many years. Remember that if you want to have those places to dance, that the owners arent in business to provide you with entertainment for free. *********************** PLEASE NOTE: The details for ALL events are on the web version at FriendsofCountryDance () and click on Lindas Dance Info so please go there for MORE events, ALL of the details, or for contact info for the events that interest you. ****************************** Welcome to new readers. Its always good to add new people. If you know of any, mostly country dance events that are not listed, please send them. Also, if you know that something I have listed is changed or no longer happening, please send that info as well. I do not check all of these things all of the time. I depend on my readers! If you are new to reading my newsletters, please note that the web addresses & emails are altered to pass through the spam filters. You will need to take out the extra ( ) and spaces to use them. ---------------------------------- *** Country by the Bay on Saturday, 7/12 had a nice, energetic crowd. We always have lots of fun. Bring friends (or come alone and make new friends) & join us Saturday, 8/9 for the next dance. The band will be Southern Winds. Dancers, its definitely worth the drive. The band will play from 8pm - midnight. Linda & Rich will be teaching a line dance at 7pm (Rockin The Wagon Wheel) & a couples lesson (Schottische) at 7:30pm Come out & join the party! The $15 cover includes dance lessons, draft beer, soda, & snacks, as well as 4 hours of open dancing. The hardwood floor is the biggest in the area and easy on the feet and legs. I am taking ALL of the table reservations by email. Reservations need to be to me by NOON dance day. Reservations must be claimed by 7:30PM. Were looking forward to seeing all of the dancing friends, as well as making some new friends. Dances are on 2nd Saturdays. *** Country By The Bay fans.....Youve asked what Im doing with the photos Ive taken. Some of them are now online. Go to my online newsletter and youll find a link to the ones Ive gotten posted. There will be more when I get around to fixing them and getting them posted. Theres also a link to them on the photo page of the website. ***Nicks in Alexandria is still THE place to learn to dance. There are lessons 5 nights a week: Couples (still ONLY $5) on Tuesday & Friday (with Linda & Rich) & Thursday (WCS withTim) ($5), Line on Tuesday (free with Kayla), Friday ($5 with Renae) & Saturday ($5 with Marcia), plus the non-country swing dance lessons on Wednesdays with Dabe & Janelle of Gotta Swing. Come on out & learn some new dance moves! Check the listings below for the particulars. There is live country music every Friday & Saturday, & occasionally Tuesdays. Come early and have dinner. There is also an occasional swing band on Wednesdays (next swing band night -8/6 Hangover Royale) Next Event(s) 8/19 Military Appreciation with Human Country Jukebox ; NICKSNIGHTCLUB () for more info. ***The next NVCWDA dances will be August 16 at Lincolnia Senior Center in Alexandria. Check the web version for details. *** OC has a new Country Bar. Cowboy Coast Saloon is open. I have not seen an advance band list. Looks like they are using Facebook (which I dont) so Ill need your help in posting the band listings. The band info I have was posted on the band sites. From what Ive read they are open daily at 11am. I think there are to be bands Wed. or Thurs.-Sat. Dance lessons with Sandy Garrish are Mondays & Tuesdays. *** The new name for Fast Eddies Centreville is The Revolution Rock & Billiards Lounge. Doesnt sound exactly promising for the country dancing to continue, but you never know. They are advertising Homegrown Saturdays & say its local country music. However, there is no listing of bands that Ive found. If youre interested in keeping any of the country & line dancing going, my suggestion is to show up whenever they have it so the new management will know people are interested and will come (AND SPEND MONEY). Line lessons are going on Tuesdays & Thursdays, but I havent found much other info. They have a schedule listed....rather hard to see....for the next couple of weekends. Looks like country bands (that I recognize anyway) are on Fridays. *** For those readers located in the western counties, there is indeed some country dancing. The Hagerstown Country Western Dance Association would love to have you join them. They hold dances on most 2nd & 4th Saturdays in Maugansville. There is more information in my online newsletter. Next regular dance is 8/9. They will be holding a 25th ANNIVERSARY DINNER DANCE on OCTOBER 25. Email tdavis2058@yahoo for more information. Check my web edition for details. ***The Country Steppers Dance Team, which is the Northern Virginia Country Western Dance Associations (NVCWDAs) dance team, is looking for new experienced country dancers to join the team. The new dancers must know the two step, waltz and swing. The team will teach the choreography, but will not teach the basics. The team performs 24 - 30 shows a year at a variety of settings around the DC metro area, such as theaters, amphitheaters, churches, fairs, retirement homes, community centers, and the Ellipse - National Christmas Tree. Most performances are on weekends. The team practices on Saturday mornings (newbies sessions are from 9-10 a.m. and regular session is from 10 a.m.- noon) at the Little River United Church of Christ, which is located route 236 across from the Northern Virginia Community College - Annandale, VA campus. For more information about the NVCWDA, please see nvcwda.org. ; Interested dancers should email the team at [email protected]. *** The Boot Scooters Dance Team from Southern MD is busy. There is dancing on Wednesdays at the Hotel Charles (with Free beginner line dance lessons), Dancercise on Mondays at All Faiths Episcopal Church with old and new dances; $5pp. *** The Elks Lodge in Waldorf, MD has Line dancing the 1st Friday of each month. However, in July & August the dance nights are 7/18 & 8/15 instead of the 1st Fridays. They sell dinners as well. Check the web version for more info. *** Dance lessons are held through county parks departments and many senior centers (mostly for 55+) in several counties in the area. Several are listed on the web version. Many require pre-registration so youll want to plan to join at the beginning of a new session. Check Charles Co. MD, Fairfax Co. VA, Manassas Park, VA, Calvert Co. MD, Herndon and Lincolnia Sr. Ctrs. for sure. If those are not your areas, check where you live. There is a new session at Mattawoman Comm. Ctr. beginning in late June. Check the online news under Looking Ahead for the web address to register. *** If youre looking for a good concert to attend in a smaller venue, try Rams Head in Annapolis on Friday, August 29 to see John Berry & his band, along with the Honeycutters. Doors open at 7, concert starts at 8. 21 and over. Tickets are $35 and there are a few left. ramsheadonstage (/event/565469?utm_source=MEL&utm_medium=78397) Rams Head is at 33 West St. Annapolis, MD, 410.268.4545 ***A number of instructors at dance events & clubs around the area also offer private lessons. Check with individual instructors for information. *** Check the Links page of Friends of Country Dance () for photos and info on Texas Dance Halls. FAIRFAX CO. DANCE UPDATE: Anyone heard anything? Or are they just waiting until nobodys paying attention? If you know of further developments, PLEASE let me know. Friends of Country Dance has a page on the website where you can read up on what took place in the Spring. Id like to have updated info if there is any. If you have more information to add, please send it to me & well get it posted. I did get a note that they are still looking at the issue. From what I heard, they seem to think its the dancing, not the drinking that needs fixing. Guess we know that these people dont dance! I have received some unsettling information about some things Arlington County is doing with clubs & restaurants too. Last word was revocation of a live entertainment & dancing permit for a place called Pines of Italy. From what I read, the county got them on some technicalities and some issues with the police. Some of the neighborhood problems were leftover from the previous business at that location. Just reporting...... PLEASE CHECK THE WEB VERSION for details and other events.
