From Toby Nelson: Thanks to the Best-Congregation-Ever! This is how you participated in a miracle: Going in for kidney stone surgery was necessary and promised to hurt. However, it is so routine that it is done as an outpatient procedure. Three hours after the procedure, the discharge nurse, Nancy Purdee, an RN, pulled the wheelchair to the foot of my bed to transport me to the front door where I would be taken home. When I sat down, she placed a bag of antibiotics and pain meds on my lap. Then a fierce chill raced up my spine. The chill immediately turned into bone rattling convulsions followed by a profuse whole body sweat. Within seconds, something in my body had changed and was now on a rampage. Hmm. Looking at me, Nurse Nancy declared, you are not going anywhere. Earlier that day, Nancy finished an advanced class on spotting sepsis in patients. She is part of a pilot program at Eden Sutter Hospital that trains medical personnel in the early recognition of this life threatening condition. I am re-admitting you to the hospital, she said. I dont remember much after that. Only later did I realize a miracle was in process. Had the chills waited just a few minutes, I would have been down the road. I would have toughed out the pain with bed rest and pain meds. Without the nurse recognizing my condition, the secret menace would have grown for hours. Sometime the next day, I would have returned to ER as sepsis shock would have shut down one vital organ after another. Even with early detection, the infectious disease doctor pumped everything he had into me. Even so, he was not confident I would survive. There was nothing more he could do. In later research, I learned that about half of patients who get sepsis do not survive - 50/50. The fight was on. The agents of life and death took up their positions in my body and would battle it out. While I am so grateful for medical technology and skilled practioners, they can treat...not cure or heal. Healing is something only God can do. God chose to use you to be in my healing process by prompting you with the urgency to pray earnestly. Fevers recorded the advance of the enemy with temperatures of 104. You prayed. My temperature would break. Time and again the hot wrath of the enemy gathered their forces to retake lost ground. This battle would go back and forth for days. Medical technology would monitor the front lines of the battle. Nurses and doctors worked to save my life, angels hovered nearby and ... You prayed. The verse, God is able.... kept going through my mind and reminded me who to trust. Eventually the battle would be won and I was discharged on Monday. I am left incredibly weak, but because you prayed, I am alive. Thank you. You are the-Best-Congregation-Ever! You are the best friends ever! Blessings on you, Pastor Toby Nelson
