From a Donkey to a Throne Posted: 27 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass” (Zechariah 9:9). At the time of Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, it was not as some expected a king might enter His kingdom, but it was just as Zechariah prophesied more than five hundred years before. We expect pageantry and grandeur when a king enters the capital city, but God often confounds the wise with His plans. Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem was not atop a fine steed but, rather, the untamed foal of a donkey—a borrowed foal. Jesus came the first time to set up His earthly kingdom, to bring salvation by Him and through Him to sin-filled mankind. He came to set the record straight for the Jewish people who had changed the Law of God as repeated by Moses into a self-promoting, pious, legalistic, works for salvation edict. He came as a lowly, meek Savior to all the world, but few were present to declare His greatness as He entered on that blessed donkey foal. His faithful threw down their coats and cloaks, while others laid palm branches in the road, as a symbolic gesture of His majesty. This, the road to the throne that passed through the cross, is Jesus’ alone to claim. REFLECTION: “And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb” (Rev. 7:10). Beverly Barnett
