From a Sunini ! The Sunni-Shi’ah split Sunni-Shi’ah is the oldest rift in this Ummah. It started during the Khilaafah of Hadhrat ‘Uthmaan (r.a). Initially, some hypocrites and troublemakers presented themselves as supporters of Hadhrat ‘Ali (r.a), and started demanding that Hadhrat ‘Uthmaan (r.a) step down from the post of Khilaafah to be replaced by Hadhrat ‘Ali (r.a). The Prophet (s.a.w) had informed Hadhrat ‘Uthmaan (r.a) that Allah will clothe you with a robe, people will want to remove it from you, but don’t allow them. He understood that to mean Khilaafah, so he did not step down. The opposition to him intensified and eventually after a prolonged siege of his house during which he was not allowed to leave his house and attend even prayers in the Masjid, he was martyred in the month of Dhul-Hijjah. Hadhrat ‘Ali had appointed his sons, the grandsons of Rasulullah, Hadhrat Hasan and Husayn (r.a) to guard his house, but the rebels intent on killing him jumped over from adjacent houses, stabbed him repeatedly while he was reciting Qu’ran causing him to be martyred. Hadhrat ‘Ali expressed his utmost disapproval at the tragic events and, with the unrest escalating, was unable to contain the trouble. He was appointed as the Khalifah by the remaining senior Sahaabah with the support of the general public. His supporters began claiming that ‘Ali (r.a) was more worthy of Khilaafah than his predecessors because of his close relationship with Rasulullah (s.a.w). That mere support then evolved to criticism of the first three Khulafaa and then hatred for allegedly oppressing and depriving Hadhrat ‘Ali of his right to Khilaafah. It then escalated to condemnation and cursing of the first three rightly guided Khulafaa. Hadhrat ‘Ali’s right to Khilaafah was then claimed to have been revealed in the Qu’ran and when it could not be proven, then all the Sahaabah were accused of changing and corrupting the Qu’ran. All the Sahaabah were also accused of becoming apostates, na’uthubillah, for not supporting Hadhrat ‘Ali to be appointed as Khalifah. A totally different compilation of supposed Hadeeth was also undertaken to justify the Khilaafah of Hadhrat ‘Ali which included condemnation and criticism of Sahaabah, questioning their loyalty to Rasulullah (s.a.w) and his descendants. In the centuries which followed, Shi’aism was refined and presented as an ideology not based on Qur’an and Sunnah, but based on emotional exploitation of the public’s feelings. Throughout history, Sunnis and Shi’as have never been able to get together and, with the differences so fundamental and sensitive, are never likely to either.
