From my nutrition textbook: Both mother and infant benefit from breastfeeding: in fact, the larger society benefits through reduced infant illness and lower health care costs. It is estimated that $13 BILLION in U.S. healthcare costs could be saved annually if 90% of babies were breastfed exclusively for six months. Its important that women breastfeed openly and in public because other women (especially those in the groups least likely to breastfeed) need to see it as a normal, acceptable, and preferable way of feeding our babies! Six months is not as long as it feels at the time, and we have to think about the long-term benefits. Breast is best!
