From our Power-Mad Petty Officials Department comes this story out of South Cumberland, Tennessee. Jim Howe dropped by his kids’ elementary school to pick them up and walk them home. But he was told that was against the rules. Students were only allowed to be picked up by parents in vehicles. Howe argued that it made no sense to wait in a mile-long traffic backup when his kids lived within walking distance of the school. His fiancée captured video of the school’s resource officer getting agitated and threatening to call the sheriff and have Howe arrested for challenging the rules and trying to walk his own kids home. I think this not only shows that some petty bureaucrats have an inflated sense of their own power, but it also shows why we have a childhood obesity epidemic.
