From terrorism to wild Alaska salmon! Strange incongruities this evening (yes, it is already evening in Paris, which is 6 hours ahead of Eastern and 10 hours ahead of Alaska). First, Martha and I are sitting in our rental apartment watching the breaking news of shootings at Ottawas War Memorial and Parliament Buildings. Very little seems to be known at this point, although that doesnt seem to impede CNNs zest for speculation and filling the time with essentially mindless commentary. As a Canadian national (with dual U.S. citizenship), my heart goes out to those affected and my hopes are for restraint and thoughtfulness in any cultural response. Second, we broke away from CNN because I was multitasking on my computer and saw a post from The Salmon Project that I just had to play on full screen and volume. It is Richard Nelson in a persona I have not seen before, that of Chef Richard (thats Ri-CHARD, which seems only appropriate here in France). The video is priceless, heartfelt and very informative not just about salmon patties but also about the history of the salmon cannery business. Good on you, Salmon Project, and also kudos to Nels and Liz McKenzie for creating, producing and starring in the segment! salmonproject.org/any-fool-can-do-cooking-extravaganza-richard-nelson?utm_source=mailchimp&utm_medium=email&utm_content=any-fool-can-do-this-in-text&utm_campaign=salmonworld&utm_source=General&utm_campaign=b9bb85f305-October_Newsletter10_13_2014&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_9883e6ca44-b9bb85f305-140040885
