From the Desk of Eric Jonathan Brewer, Founder of Cleveland Challenger: Ex-offenders seeking work! Heres a link to the only Ohio organization to have obtained $2 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to help you find job training and jobs. Toward Employment is located in Cleveland. The names of staff and board members are identified, but the organization doesnt appear to generate a lot of local attention. Im also including a link to the U.S. Department of Labor announcement of the grant, not only to Toward Employment, but to 36 other organizations around the USA that received a $2 million cut each of the total $74 million that was available. So for those FB friends outside Ohio who are ex-offendrs, follow this link and scroll down to learn about the grant and see if your state was included. You might want to also explore the labor departments website for other job and grant information. dol.gov/opa/media/press/eta/ETA20141195.htm When I visited Toward Employments website I made note that the news and events link had more publicity about it being praised as an organization than its officials telling ex-offenders they were receiving money to help them. I saw a former judges name as a board member, Peggy Foley Jones, so Toward Employment could be receiving clients through referrals. It doesnt mean the non-profit doesnt accept walk-ins. Check it out. And heres a tip for folk who use federally-funded non-profits like Toward Employment and others. The feds are serious about how non-profits that receive federal dollars spend the money. Their records are public. Theyre supposed to be audited and monitored every year. Every federal agency has a field office with employees whose only job is to monitor federal grant recipients. The federal employees and the agencies that receive federal dollars dont want any trouble. This is an area where you have the power to contact your Congressional representative and U.S. Senator to report issues of non-compliance, or an agencys failure to serve clients and live up to its grant agreement. And all grant agreements are online and public records. Here are two email addresses that should get you a copy of Toward Employments grant agreement if you ask for it under the Freedom of Information Act. [email protected] or [email protected] Your member of Congress and the Senate has employees whose job it is to call federal agencies on your behalf, and to make sure that federal grant money is reaching the people its intended to help after its awarded to non-profits like Toward Employment and many others. To become fully empowered about how to benefit from the federal ex-offender grant, follow the links Ive shared and take the time to read. Dont read over the information. Read every word and instruction. To learn more about the federal governments Re-Entry for Ex-Offenders programs, follow this link. doleta.gov/RExO/aboutRExO.cfm towardsemployment.org/about/
