From the Garden District Neighborhood Association (GDNA): WRITE DOWN SERIAL NUMBERS I wanted to stress something that Lt. Hammerstrom and CSO Becky Noel said at the Alvernon-Grant Initiative (AGI) meeting this week because I have heard the same thing from other police officers over and over again. Write serial numbers down and store them in a safe place. Also, photograph items of value in your home. This evening, I stopped and talked to a police officer while I was walking my dog. During the course of our conversation, I told him I distributed an e-newsletter to the neighborhood. He asked me to communicate how important it is to record serial numbers as you purchase items. Police often recover stolen items, but they are not able to trace who they belong to because people rarely write down serial numbers. So, from the minutes of the AGI meeting, let me repeat what Lt. Hammerstrom said: If you are burglarized, itemize what was stolen and, if possible, supply TPD with photos and serial numbers. TPD enters the serial numbers in a national database. Be especially sure that you get numbers off electronic items because they are the most likely to be stolen. Laptops, Flat screen TVs, iPads, guns, Kindles, Nooks are popular. Serial numbers are on the back or bottom of an item. (It is easiest to get it off of the box, though.)
