From the Rev. Deacon Larry Barnhill Reflection for 22 Jan. 2014 Standing up and standing Firm Today’s message comes out of Ezekiel 2:1-10. This is a very key verse for those who call themselves Disciples of Christ in this day and age. In this passage Ezekiel is called by God and told to stand up and speak the Truth to a stubborn, rebellious, and obstinate people. The same can be said now of Western Society as could be said of the nation of Israel in the time of Ezekiel’s ministry. Most of Western Society has turned its back on the tenets and commands that God the Father has set for all peoples, all nations, all races. Instead of looking to what God has ordained and dictated for how society should live and function the world instead has embraced and relishes in its sin and now bows down before the throne of Satan and his minions. The classic definition of sin is : I want what I want when I want it. This is the attitude of today’s world. There was a time when in the USA the saying was “Ask not what your Country can do for you, but what can you do for your Country.” These days because people have failed to stand up and hold the line and enforce what God has declared that saying now has been transformed to read “Ask not what your Country can do for you, demand it.” This is not the thinking and the lifestyle of a true disciple. God calls us to stand up for the truth even when no one else is standing. Yes we will face hardships, briars, thorns, ridicule, and persecution. However, Christ told us that this would happen because of our relationship with Him. God is working to send His people into the dark recesses of the world. The question now remains will you stand up for the truth and bring the Light of Christ to those areas as you stand up for God, or will you shrink into the shadows denying your faith, your hope, and your salvation that can only be found in Christ?
