From the book .............Steve recalls fondly, “On this exploratory trip we found a few seamounts with really good potential, holding lots of grouper. However the seamounts were too far from New Zealand to develop a fresh fish fishery and our experiences with frozen grouper weren’t good at all. Towards the end of the trip we inadvertently wandered inside a nation’s EEZ – we were in Pitcairn Island waters. Approaching Pitcairn, we received a welcoming call on the VHF radio from their land-based coastal watch keepers. In those days, the Pitcairn Islanders had watchers on constant alert, hoping that passing vessels would agree to stop on their isolated outpost and trade”. “We stopped over in Pitcairn and it ended up being the best part of the entire venture. We stayed for about two weeks and toured all of Pitcairn, as well as nearby Ducie and Henderson Islands. Pitcairn was fantastic. We met the descendants of the Bounty and their Tahitian girlfriends and became friends with many of them. We also spent time with some descendants of shipwrecked American whalers and a couple of missionaries – 59 people in all. We all took turns staying on Pitcairn for a few days at a time while the rest of the crew took the Pitcairn Islanders lobster fishing. We finally found pretty reasonable quantities of crayfish.”
