From the daily practice, “Shop in Reverse.” There’s no question about it, we live in a consumer culture. The movement toward consumerism is not random, it’s actually a by-product of the rule Be Popular where we feel included by purchasing product. Goods and services are increasingly marketed on the basis of image, providing buyers the opportunity to feel that they are part of a tribe or group, to secure status, and to reinforce a sense of belonging and acceptance. We are increasingly invited to define ourselves through consumption rather than through expression. We are invited to be the next one to join in with a purchase instead of the first one to stand out with a unique vision. Breaking the Be Popular rule, or any of the rules for that matter, requires a conscious effort to reverse the habit. Today’s practice is to pay attention to the impulse to shop in any way shape or form, and when it does arise, to shift out of the buyer mentality and to become a supplier in some way, providing a unique perspective, idea, solution, or vision to somebody else. It’s a lot easier to shop and reject purchases of things you don’t like than it is to create something and have others reject what you produce. Make an attempt today to swap the impulse to possess and consume for the act of expressing, offering, providing, or even selling something of value. breakarule/2013/break-the-rule-be-normal-unshop/
