Funding. That has been a big question for us. And support from our local hospital. We have always been hopeful both would be available. We finally have some answers about both. Funding is available through the NZ Ministry of Healths High Cost Treatment Pool if it is applied for by your local DHB specialist. In our case it would be our cardiologist. He has now stated he does not agree with the US surgeons assessment of Patrick and cant recommend surgery. We are baffled and confused that the local doctor deems the top Ebsteins specialist in the world as incorrect. They are looking at the same clinical data. Our local cardiologists decision means we cant access any funding, even the small amount we could claim through our private health insurance. So we are having to truly go it alone. We will have to swing into full fundraising mode now. Weve had our estimate of costs from the Mayo Clinic and it is within the ballpark we anticipated. Again, I turn to the facts and figures. Dr Dearani has operated on over 800 Ebsteins patients and performed close to 300 Cone Repairs (the proposed repair for Patrick). The local surgeon has operated on 10-20 Ebsteins patients and not yet attempted a Cone Repair. The Mayo Clinic is a highly respected institution. We are not going to some cowboy surgeon operating out of a truck in Botswana!!! 7 weeks till surgery.... givealittle.co.nz/cause/fixingpatricksbrokenheart
