Funding needed to release tracheostomy babies - Adams Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams this morning raised the issue of seven tracheostomy babies who are well enough to go home but are stuck in Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, because of a failure by the HSE to provide a homecare package for them. The Sinn Féin leader welcomed the Taoiseach’s reply in which Mr. Kenny said that he expected this matter to be addressed in the upcoming HSE Service Plan. Gerry Adams said: “The Programme for Government commits to integrated healthcare delivery “in which the right care is delivered in the right place”. Today we learn from Tracheostomy Advocacy Group (TAG) that the number of ‘tracheostomy babies’ in Our Lady’s Hospital, Crumlin, who are well enough to go home but can’t, because the HSE hasn’t sanctioned safe levels of homecare, is at the “worst crisis level ever”. The number involved is relatively small – at seven – however the impact on their lives and on their families is significant given that they are effectively trapped in hospital. Some of these children have been in the hospital’s transitional ward for two years and for two of them it will be their second Christmas in hospital. The HSE and Dept. of Health need to address in the HSE Service Plan the need for a central funding stream and state-wide protocol for a safe Homecare Package so these children can go home to their families.”
