Furkids will be at Books For Less - North Point during the Spencer Quinn book signing Wednesday September 18th with dogs for adoption! What began as a quest to find homes for a mother cat and her three kittens has become Furkids, Inc., a nonprofit organization that operates the largest cage-free, no kill shelter in the Southeast for homeless cats, a spacious shelter for dogs, thirteen full-time adoption centers at PetSmart and PETCO and a network of foster homes for cats and dogs. The Furkids mission is to provide a safe haven for abandoned and homeless dogs and cats until the organization can match them with new owners in loving, lifelong homes. The mission strives to help end pet overpopulation in Georgia through sterilization, high-quality adoption and pet care education to people in the community. Each year, Furkids and its Small Dog Rescue division rescue, shelter, sterilize, rehabilitates and places a thousand animals in permanent, loving homes. Furkids, which cares for more animals on a daily basis than any other local organization, including the Atlanta Humane Society, has rescued and altered more than 7,000 animals since its founding in 2002. Approximately 600 animals are in the Furkids program today, in the Furkids and Small Dog Rescue shelters, PetSmart and PETCO adoption centers and foster homes. Furkids is the only animal rescue organization in metro Atlanta that invites children (of all ages) to volunteer in the shelter to interact with the cats. Furkids also provides in-shelter pet therapy in which individuals with developmental disabilities can interact. Furkids and Small Dog Rescue operate entirely on monetary and in-kind donations, modest adoption fees and through the services of a dedicated network of volunteers.
