Further proof that Chris Cilizza is a useless Beltway hack who spouts conventional wisdom that further debases our politics. On one level, you can be cynical and say hes right—this awful tragedy will probably not result in what we desperately need: gun control. But what he (and to be fair, other DC reporters) completely fails to grasp is how politicians kowtow to the gun lobby, and how our filibuster rules in the US Senate mean that Mitch McConnell can derail such legislation. And that we have a moral imperative—regardless of party or ideology—to do something about it. Oh, but no. Thats only for the activists to write about, not the reasonable journalists who must stay objective. Near the end, Cillizza writes: Passion almost always matters more than public support. For those who oppose tighter gun laws, it is an absolute passion and oftentimes the single most important issue on which they make decisions about which candidates to support. Never mind that the NRA has been completely hijacked by insane extremists who will oppose every single reasonable, watered-down proposal because this is a sacred cow. Never mind that the NRA does not represent average gun owners, but instead represents gun manufacturers who stand to make money the more we have these gun massacres—which fuels our culture of fear. Never mind that a good journalists job is not to be a mere stenographer and further make the world cynical—but to act as an honest broker of information, and to call out people when theyre wrong. We have to fuel the passion of Richard Martinez.
