Future Days Yes. One day things will break down. Whole sections of your past shall disappear Like a sleeping town in the distance As you drive by in the mist. Things will blur and be almost lost: You will strain to remember exactly How your father looked on early mornings, When he set out on his bicycle for work While you stood by the gate waving him goodbye. You will barely bring back the familiar lanes Of your old home town, the fields Where you played with friends till it was dark. The days shall wear out like the pages Of your favorite comics and story books. Somewhere only a name will be missing: Strangers will stare back from photographs. Sometime whole months and years will sink And vanish without a trace like the Titanic. Even the momentous events will rush by: The first love, the farewells and heart-breaks Shall disappear, and will not hurt that much. You will remember things: It is the details that will gradually escape. You will forget how your mother smelled… That sweet mix of jasmine and incense sticks. You shall remember your love But not the landmarks of your chase: The first coffee, the letters and late night messages, Shall all fade away like leaves in autumn. Some snatches shall keep coming back: Perhaps the print of a curtain, The taste of a bitter cough syrup, Or the smell of fresh paint on a bench Will trigger memories that you had forgotten: A day you lay in the grass, a book in hand, Watching your love sleeping Among the buttercups and daisies The sun shining in the dark curls of her flowing hair. Do not despair if you have to give up This patchwork quilt of your memories. By then you would have understood That growing up is just a list of things You shall learn to live without. It is not the chronicling of the pages, Or remembering history that shall matter. You would have lived your own story. No one can take that away. Diptesh Ghosh
