Future of the Park Uncertain - Your Support Needed. Eco Discovery - TopicsExpress

Future of the Park Uncertain - Your Support Needed. Eco Discovery Park is at a crossroads. We have spent almost three years creating a place, working on a concept, and proving that many people care about preserving our green spaces for all to enjoy. In order for us to move to our next phase and create the educational component of the park, we need to obtain ownership of the property. This will enable us to apply for grant funding and establish corporate partnerships. We made an initial offer to James City County in April and they decided to put the property out for sale through an RFP process. We were the only entity that submitted a bid and we were hopeful that we would be able to meet with the County and negotiate a positive outcome for both parties. Unfortunately, that process was recently terminated by the County and we are now somewhat in limbo. Moving forward, Eco Discovery Park’s Board of Directors have decided that the best course of action is to ask our supporters to voice their opinions on the future of the Park. The James City County Board of Supervisors ultimately will vote on any sale of public land. Therefore, we are asking you to contact them, let them know your connection to the Park, and why you believe it is a great asset for our community. If you use the park as a boat owner, slip holder, kayaker, biker, outdoor enthusiast, nature lover or environmentalist; or you have been lucky enough to take part in a kayak tour or camp offered by Chesapeake Experience; or you’ve taken a cruise on the Jamestown Discovery with Captain Corey; now is the time to speak up and let our Supervisors know how important this project is to you. Eco Discovery Park is a 501C3 nonprofit organization, whose mission, along with environmental education, is very much about giving as many people as possible the opportunity to experience nature and the outdoors at an affordable cost. We have achieved a great deal in a short time with minimal funding. This is due to thousands of volunteer hours, great support from County staff, and a true sense of community in the planning and execution of our projects. I am truly overwhelmed by the support, guidance and motivation that I have received from so many in this community. The aim for this park has always been to create a place where everyone involved can be proud to call it theirs – a true grassroots effort by those that care. Please take the time to reflect on your experiences, craft an email or letter, and share it with those that make the decisions. Now is the time to speak up, we have a great park, community marina, meeting place, and so much potential moving forward. I would hate to see all of this effort go to waste.
