GALs page followers, listen up. (this is an expansion on the story I posted yesterday) There was a horrific tragedy in South Carolina where a a custodial father murdered his five children after the couple divorced. The mother was Pro Se (because SC does not offer pro bono legal representation for divorce cases except for extreme poverty), the father was represented by an attorney. There was a NON-lawyer GAL (those are legal in SC) assigned to the case. It is important to understand that the GALs husband, is a practicing family attorney in the area. The parents were granted joint custody, father primary custodian; Mom had supervised visitation (no reason given). This divorce was granted in Oct. of 2013. DSS (CPS) was involved more than once since that time, but the children were never removed from the home. On Sept. 3rd this mother reported her children missing. She had not been able to contact them for days. (she lived right down the road from them). Because Dad was primary custodian, an Amber alert could not be issued. Seven days later, the father was stopped for erratic driving in AL. The officer detected the Odor of blood and noticed some in the car. He ran a check on the father and found out there was an APB on him because the Lexington County Sheriff Department was looking for the kids. Very quickly, it was discovered that this father had murdered his 5 children. He killed them in SC..and transported them to AL. It has been further revealed that this man is an Ex Con, who should have spent 13 years in prision. Instead, he spent 2.5 years then moved to SC, where he married his X-wife. There are so many failure in this story. If he had served his time in jail these children would have never been born. if DSS (CPS) had listened to the mom, recommended she have the children, they would be alive. If his attorney and the GAL had done just a little bit of research, they would have known they would have uncovered this mans criminal history. If SC provided legal representation for those who cant afford an attorney, he could have brought to light the DV going on in the marriage. I will post links to the news story. This case isnt just one that slipped through cracks. Its not an anomoly. This case is everyones worst nightmare. Take time to read the articles and share. This mother has endured a horrific loss. If her case serves as a warning for change, not just in SC but nation wide, perhaps her precious babies lives will not have been lost in vane. #voiceshavepower
