GJMM’s Majua president alleges favouritism in local trade union Kurseong, 13 June: Alleging ‘favouritism’ in his own party’s local trade union, Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha’s (GJMM) Majua branch president, Rudra Tamang, has appealed to his party leaders and demanded that they take immediate steps on the matter. Talking to reporters here today, Mr Tamang alleged that some local unit representatives of the Darjeeling Terai Dooars Plantation Labour Union (DTDPLU), affiliated to the GJMM, are engaged in different ‘anti-labour’ activities in the Man-Majua tea plantation area in the Kurseong Sub-division. He further said that the local trade union leadership has been “creating chaos” in the tea estate. “Our ancestors have worked in the plantation for ages, and we are working there now, but presently, some local trade union leaders are saying we are outsiders, and that after retirement, no member in our family can replace us at the jobs in the tea estate,” he alleged. Mr Tamang further said that such a matter is not limited within his family. “Several other workers have also been labeled as men from the busty (village) and outsiders by the local trade union,” he said. He said the area and the houses where they have been living still falls under the tea estate, while even the land-documents are registered with the tea plantation. “We have been only paying the “raja khajana” to the panchayat. Not only this, my wife is still working in the plantation. “So how are we not actual residents of the area?” he said. “Efforts to contact DTDPLU local representatives failed despite several attempts.” sns
